Golden hour with the Wonder Grannies
Elefilx - February 4, 2021
After an urgent plea to people around the world by The Gentle Giants Elephants Stay Home Project, the funds were raised so miraculously quickly it made one epic rescue happen. The three elephants, except Mae Mai, were set to travel by trucks from Phuket to Chiang Mai where Elephant Nature Park is located. That was about 1530 kilos or 950 miles; the LONGEST distance ever for them to transport elephants! A 57 hour truck ride! Despite some challenges along the trip, the elephants arrived home where they are safe and will be well cared for the rest of their lives.
3 turned into 4! Not only did we rescue Fah Rong, Mai Thai & Mae Mai, but we assisted in Duj Dao's rescue.
Duj Dao means "star-like" and at 80+ years of age she is now a much loved member of the famous Wonder Grannies. Duj Dao was subjected to decades of cruelty; living as a slave in logging & then spending the last 15 years giving rides in Phuket. After a very long 57 hour journey, Duj Dao made it safely to ENP on On January 16, 2021. Thanks to our friend and partner, Lek Chailert, her amazing team, NuuNa and the incredible support from the Gentle Giant family, Duj Dao is finally free to live the rest of her life at ENP.
All 3 grannies, including Mae Mai, are thriving at Elephant Nature Park.
To celebrate this amazing journey, an amazing, talented supporter (Aon Tanya) partnered with Gentle Giants Elephants to help with fundraising. She designed one of a kind, gorgeous T-shirts and other merchandise for each one of the 4 elephants. 100% of the proceeds were given for food and care for our beloved Wonder Grannies. If you wish to know more about how to purchase the merchandise please email us info@thegentlegiants.org
*Why was Mae Mai part of the Wonder Grannies when she is in her 20's? Because when she was found, near death, Lek believed she was in her 60's or 70's.

JANUARY 8, 2021 - Mae Mai's Walk to ENP
Mae Mai had to be walked down the river, approximately 1 kilometer due of the difficult terrain, to Elephant Nature Park. What would of taken a healthy elephant approximately 15 minutes to walk this journey, took Mae Mai 4 hours. Each step she took was excruciatingly painful. We witnessed her agony. But in her great wisdom and able to see Lek's beautiful heart (who walked with her), she knew this would be the only way to get out alive and end the never-ending suffering. Mae Mai fianlly made it to Elephant Nature Park. She is in critical condition but she is brave. Mae Mai is now receiving the medical care she needs. MARCH 2, 2021 - Medical Care Continues
We are happy to report Mae Mae is doing well! However, she is still healing her wounded body & her broken heart. Recovering at Elephant Nature Park, Mae Mai is receiving the best medical care from Dr. Tom and his team, she now gets to swim in the therapy pool next to her enclosure, which helps her leg. She is also receiving lots of love from everyone at ENP & around the world. GG has been sending Mae Mai special nutritional supplements to help her regain her weight, strength and health! UPDATE 1-14-20: ‼️ HELP‼️ URGENT‼️ - Fah Rong and Mai Thai's rescue has been interrupted. The truck carrying Mai Thai broke down in the middle of the road. We just spoke to Lek and she let us know that due to the unexpected truck break down we need to raise URGENT funds to help with the journey!
We need a minimum of $5,000 Dollars
UPDATE 1/11/21: URGENT PLEASE HELP‼️ OUR DEADLINE HAS CHANGED
Fha Rong and Mai Thai MUST be rescued NOW!
We ONLY have TODAY to make our goal. Our window of opportunity is closing quickly! Due to Covid, these gentle ones are given very little food. Plus, there is the threat of the country closing lock down so there will be travel restrictions in place and no one will be able to travel from one city to another. As you know these two are in Phuket, traveling to Highlands. BUT first they will be taken to ENP because their shelters still need to be constructed. If we don't move them NOW we risk losing them to the logging industry or starvation! PLEASE we need everyone to come together - Donate, Share, Tweet, Speak to colleagues, advocates, friends and family. Spread the word. Mai Thai, the sadness in her eyes is deep as she awaits what her fate will be. She's malnourished, extremely underweight, chained in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The scars that adorn her body tell only a small story of her suffering. Her ear gives us small glimpse of what she's endured.
The pressure to rescue her and Rah Roong NOW is overwhelming!
The threat that they will be sent to the logging industry is crushing.
UPDATE: Thank you GG family for making this possible. Your loving, caring, compassionate hearts have helped secure a better future for these precious gentle ones. Please note that any additional funds raised will go towards everything the girls need. Shelter, food, mahouts, medical care. As we know their care doesn't stop when they are rescued but truly begins!
Skin and bones... Broken bodies... Shattered souls...
We have just TWO WEEKS, until January 21st, to come up with the necessary funds!! Funds are going towards medical care, rescues, transportations and shelter.
Mae Mai just 30 years old. By looking at her you just can't believe it. Before Covid she was full bodied and healthier. But when Covid hit she was sent to the logging industry. This is the end result. She's now broken. Literally broken. He leg shattered, her soul crushed. Mae Mai has just been standing there waiting
for just death to come.
Fha Rong (Sunrise) 65 yo and extremely overworked & Mai Tai (Thai Silk),
only in her 40's, already just skin and bones; are now destined for the
same horrors in the logging industry.
We just can't allow it, Please, help us save these three beautiful gentle souls. Let us join hands so that we may offer new lives, new beginnings to Mae Mai, who will flourish at ENP and Fha Rong & Mai Tai who will thrive at Highlands.
