Kaavan flies home to Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary November 28, 2021!!
Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary is giving Kaavan the life he's always deserved to have.
4 dedicated woman, along with thousands of amazing advocates, fought 5 long years; working non stop to free Kaavan. It's now a reality and Kaavan is in the best most loving hands possible! No words can truly express the happiness! The lesson is Never Give Up! Love wins!
~ $30,000.00 is needed to get started ~
In 1985 at the tender age of 1, Kaavan was taken from his homeland in Sri Lanka and exiled to a zoo in Islamabad. His years of captivity, loss of his companion, and then solitude have inflicted both physical and psychological trauma. NOW, at 36 years of age, he is in his prime and ready for an adventure, a new beginning.
For 5 long years, the world has watched and hoped for Kaavan's freedom, with a vigilant few, relentless in their advocacy on his behalf -- David Casselman #TeamKaavan's Anika Sleem, Carey Ostrer & Denise Coenraadts; along with the founders & co-founders of Gentle Giants; and importantly, many extraordinary, dedicated advocates. All have been fighting for Kaavan's freedom since the very beginning. Now, Lek Chailert and Darrick Thomsom are reaching out to the world, asking them to come together to please help build Kaavan's new home at Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary.
On May 21st, 2020 - The High Court of Islamabad made the decision to free Kaavan, releasing him into the care of Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary. This is where Kaavan will
have a new lease on life.
Team Kaavan continues to work on this translocation effort by following all protocols for transport.
Now we need your help!
For 36 years Kaavan has lived in a tiny space in a broken down shelter, made of tin. He's only known loneliness, abuse and cruelty. Now he is going to the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary! Where he will get to roam for acres and acres free! BUT first we need to raise the funds to build his home! Please donate! All amounts help. Together lets build this handsome gentle giant the home he so deserves.
Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful place for Kavaan to call home. His protected space must yet be carved out of this wild land. Kaavan requires perimeter fencing for his initial shelter.
We are reaching out to all those who have been fighting for and waiting to see Kavaan free; to help with the cost of building his home, sheltering him in his new homeland.
It’s expensive to keep a bull elephant in a free roaming state. We have the land for him, but he needs a protected habitat to live out his days in the good company of other elephants.
To simplify what’s needed for the sheltering, here is a cost breakdown, so that everyone can feel that they contributed in some way, whether large or small your donation, to building Kavaan's home.
A basic cost outline for sheltering Kavaan:
FENCING MAIN QUARANTINE AREA: For those supporters who would like to get your name engraved on a post, a donation of $300.00 will carry your name forever towards his FREEDOM !
The 3 meter high perimeter fence, of not less than 800 meters long, for his primary quarantine zone, encloses ~10 acres. An internal partition area is required (~3 acres) where his shelter, pool, enrichment and training wall are located so that staff can safely do "yard work".
It also creates a safe place for introduction to our other elephants. It would be intended, given support, to continue to enclose a much larger area (@$300/m) where Kavaan could roam freely, potentially, with our other elephants.
QUARANTINE FENCE MATERIALS: $240,000 ($300/m)
QUARANTINE FENCE LABOR: $50,000
SHELTER: $15,000
TRAINING WALL (protected contact) : $2,500 (protected Contact)
POOL: $30,000
TRASH PUMP: $1,500
WELL/SOLAR PUMP: $5,000
UNLOADING DOCK AREA: $1,500
ROADWAY: $5,000
TOGETHER - WE CAN DO THIS!
Thank you ALL for your support and generosity
